Our mission is to educate students to the highest international levels with a spiraling liberal arts and sciences curriculum benchmarked to the best education systems in the world.
Our advanced curriculum, unmatched in breadth and depth, prepares students with the content knowledge, critical thinking, and self-advocacy skills needed to be successful throughout their education and well beyond.
Our passionate, expert teachers are unwavering in their belief that with hard work, the right support, encouragement, and inspiration, any child can excel.
We are committed to a joyful learning culture where hard work is celebrated and intellectual pursuits result in extraordinary outcomes.
BASIS Independent Brooklyn respects and honors every individual and the many experiences that they bring to our community. We believe that embracing our diversity leads to social emotional and academic success. Our curriculum reflects the depth of our commitment to diverse, multicultural perspectives. We seek to understand the complex, rich identities of self and others, and our community aims to cultivate kindness, empathy, and respect in our students. Teaching about historical conflict is encouraged in an atmosphere that is both safe and honest, and we hope to equip students with the needed skills to have challenging conversations to move us all forward. We believe this pursuit develops individuals who will take action when confronted with injustice, preparing our students to be productive, resilient, contributing citizens in a global world.
As a community, BASIS Independent Brooklyn vows to hold all of our members accountable to the Five Rs or R to the 5th, which are central to our beliefs and mission as a school.
Respect Yourself
Our team at BASIS Independent Brooklyn empowers students to advocate for themselves, to understand the importance of taking care of their bodies, to understand their feelings, and to respect themselves. Personal boundaries and self-care are discussed across every grade level through age-appropriate strategies and workshops.
Respect Your Classroom
The classroom is a student’s habitat; as such, it is critical to create a climate of respect where students feel confident and ready to tackle whatever comes their way. This expectation also ensures students regard their teachers with courteous and respectful attitudes.
Respect Your Friendships
An effective support system includes peers just as much as it includes teachers and families. BASIS Independent Brooklyn students support one another through their academic journeys with relationships of equal respect and care.
Respect Your Learning
At BASIS Independent Brooklyn, we recognize and value all phases of the learning process, including academics, social growth, emotional perseverance, and communicative progression. When students and teachers alike respect the essential elements of the learning process, progress follows.
Respect Your Community
A respectful community fosters youth development and the growth necessary for productive actions and satisfying end results. It brings educators, students, and families together to equally contribute to an ultimate shared vision.
BASIS Independent Brooklyn is a community of students, staff and families united in the pursuit of excellence through education. It is our mission to approach education with passion and discipline in order to realize our potential as the active members of a better world. Nurturing an environment of authenticity and respect, we work to develop our voices and our habits in order to affect positive change. The success of our mission rests on the responsibility that each of us takes in fostering this environment. Together, the Honor Code and school pledge give us the opportunity to hold ourselves accountable for the words and the actions that we use to define the character of our community. Furthermore, they guide us in maintaining honesty and integrity, in building bridges and in resolving conflicts by engaging us in constructive dialogue with one another.
The Honor Code applies to every aspect of student and staff life at BASIS Independent Brooklyn. Beyond the classroom, the honor code reflects the greater academic and social components of our community. United in the pursuit of excellence, the BASIS Independent Brooklyn students and faculty strive to exemplify conduct that is consistent with the integrity of our mission. This includes respect and honesty in our exchanges with one another and in all scholastic work. The value we place on honesty and integrity is paramount to the success of our mission. We know that there can be no achievement without an authentic demonstration of skill and individual commitment to personal improvement. To this end, each student understands that they will not give or receive aid when taking exams, unless directed to do so by the faculty member proctoring the exam. Valuing the words and works of others and to avoid plagiarism, students will properly cite (in footnotes, quotations, and bibliographies) all sources, including memorized and reproduced material, used in the preparation of written work, including examinations, unless otherwise instructed by the professor who assigned the work.
Defining the quality of our community is a responsibility that we each share. This quality requires the active mutual respect for our different experiences and perspectives. As members of the BASIS Independent Brooklyn community, we celebrate scholarship and embrace diversity. As teammates in a shared mission, we understand that membership in the BASIS Independent Brooklyn community is dependent on our commitment to the Honor Code. It is with these convictions, that we adopt the below pledge:
In the pursuit of my personal goals and with respect for the mission of my community, I pledge to:

Dear Families,
Congratulations, and welcome to BASIS Independent Brooklyn! Families often have questions during their decision making process about the communication and operational systems and procedures that serve our community. We understand that while the academic curriculum and community play a large part in your decision to enroll at a school, the other part is logistics. Below, you will find information on transportation, lunch, the 2026-2027 school calendar, hours, dismissal, and more. You will find answers to many of your questions below, but don’t hesitate to email our Operations Team if you have follow-up questions or don’t see your question addressed.

NEW FAMILY NEWSLETTER
The bimonthly “New Family Newsletter” will provide updates on school events and flag operational matters. We will use the emails provided to the Admissions Team for the distribution list; if your email has changed, please contact the Admissions Team. All new families will be merged into our Family Newsletter before the new school year, which is sent every Friday via ParentSquare during the year. The first "New Family Newsletter" will be published in early March.
PARENTSQUARE
During the school year, communications are sent to families primarily through ParentSquare; families can also message faculty and staff through ParentSquare. Each parent/guardian receives a unique log-in to ParentSquare using the email provided on the application. Enrolled families are invited to join ParentSquare in April.
SCHOOL BILLING
All tuition and school fees are billed through the BASIS Independent Payment Portal. This portal is known as “BIPP,” and families access BIPP through ParentSquare. Each family has one shared BIPP account with a unique login for all of their students.
TRANSPORTATION
We encourage families at both campuses to make use of nearby public transportation options. The BASIS Independent Brooklyn Upper School campus (556 Columbia Street) in Red Hook is conveniently located near stops for the B61 and B57, as well as the F and G trains at Smith & 9th Street Station. BASIS Independent Brooklyn Lower School (405 Gold Street) is located centrally in Downtown Brooklyn near stops for the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, D, F, G, N, Q, and R trains; the LIRR at Atlantic Terminal; and many MTA bus lines, including the B25, B26, B38, B52, B54, B57, B61, B62, and B67. Here is a link to the MTA Trip Planner.
Students in Kindergarten to grade 12 are eligible for a free MetroCard based on their home address. An eligibility chart is available online. A student MetroCard is issued by the school for either a full-fare or half-fare.
Families are also welcome to use bikes, strollers, skateboards, and scooters. We have private storage at both campuses for these modes of transportation. For those families who live further from campus, we invite you to use our Neighborhood Connections Guide (to come in April), an opt-in list of new and returning families, to help arrange car/walk/public transportation pools for your student(s).
Transportation between campuses, for families who have students at both campuses, is provided free-of-charge via a connector bus running from the Lower School to the Upper School in the mornings, and the reverse route in the afternoons.
Our fee-based bussing program includes morning, afternoon, and late bus services throughout New York City. Bussing is currently provided to our Upper School campus only.
Our bus routes attempt to accommodate the majority of students who sign up, and they are carefully planned each school year. Some stops are subject to change based on ridership from other areas plus any overall demand for new routes. We will host an event with BASIS Independent Brooklyn’s transportation partner, The Cheese Bus company, in April, so parents can meet the team leaders and ask questions about the program.
We do recommend signing up for bus service as early as possible once registration is open, as some routes experienced waitlists this year. We encourage families to look at different routes and stops to see if viable alternates exist for your student in case of a waitlist, but also to explore your public transportation and car pool options, above. Please note: the below routes and costs are for the current academic year (2025-2026).
STUDENT LUNCH AND SNACK CANTEEN
We partner with Butter Beans Kitchen to provide healthy and tasty meals that are tree-nut- and peanut-free. Students are not required to enroll in the fee-based Butter Beans program, and are welcome to bring lunches from home. The program offers a family-style meal option, as well as a grab & go café. The grab & go café is open only to students in grades 5 and above.
BASIS Independent Brooklyn is a nut-aware school with designated tables in our cafeterias where students can sit if their lunch from home contains tree nuts and/or peanuts. Special attention is given to cleaning lunch tables nightly. All PreK classrooms are tree-nut and peanut-free, as students eat lunch and snack in their classrooms.
Butter Beans does not provide snacks during the day to students; families must send snacks to school.
STUDENT DISMISSAL
We use School Dismissal Manager (SDM) to track student dismissal plans. All students are added to SDM. Parents have a unique log-in to update information for their children. The system is used to track all dismissal instructions, as well as student absences. More information about SDM will be provided prior to the start of the school year.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
The majority of extracurricular activities are coordinated by our Auxiliary Team. You can visit the Athletics, Clubs, and After-School tab for more details. Extracurricular Catalogues are published twice a year for fall and spring activities. For fall 2026, the Extracurricular Catalogue will be released in early August and enrollment will open in mid-August. Registration for extracurricular activities is on a first-come, first-served basis.
We look forward to welcoming your family to our community!

Dear New Bears,
My name is Niko and I have been at BASIS Independent Brooklyn for four years. My favorite thing about BASIS Independent Brooklyn is spending time with my friends during recess and lunch and how supportive all the teachers are. I also love the special projects we get to do, especially in science. One of my favorites was my science project where I got to choose my own research question. I studied whether the type of shoes worn during a 50-meter dash affects running speed. I also really enjoyed our Egyptian gods project. It was so fun to learn history in a creative way.
My favorite class is Classics, and it is taught by my favorite teacher Ms. Tilly. She is very kind, supportive, and funny, but when you cross the line, she can be strict, which helps everyone stay focused.
My advice for new students is not to be afraid to go to student hours if you are having trouble in school. When I’m struggling with something, I go to student hours to get one-on-one help from my teachers, and it always helps me catch up.
Sincerely,
Niko
Hi, I'm Scottie, a fifth grader, from BASIS Independent Brooklyn! I've been at this school for six years and I've loved each and every one of them! BASIS Independent Brooklyn is filled with kind, thoughtful, and caring people. One of my favorite aspects of BASIS Independent Brooklyn is how it makes everyone feel like they belong. There's an after-school club for nearly every interest, and although we separate into "houses of cards" for school assemblies, we are all BASIS Bears. I also love the classes and teachers. No two subjects are ever the same; plus, our teachers make our lessons informative, yet fun! I love Classics for its hilarious songs, Math for its rewarding challenges (shoutout to my fellow "algebros"!), and English for its exciting literature. BASIS Independent Brooklyn is a wonderful school. My advice is to make the most of it and enjoy every moment! Go Bears!

Dear Middle School Families,
Welcome to BASIS Independent Brooklyn! It is always a joy to witness the growth of our community as we continue to educate and challenge young minds. I am truly honored that you have chosen our school to nurture, educate, and care for your student(s).
This is my third year as the Director of Middle School, and I am proud of how far we’ve come in building a program that prioritizes academic excellence, fosters a strong community, and instills a positive culture. We are committed to continuing the growth of our Middle School Program to ensure that every student thrives both academically and socially.
As the Director of Middle School, I strive to work diligently alongside students, teachers, parents, and staff to achieve these goals. Using the best practices and resources available, I am dedicated to meeting the needs of all students while fostering an environment that encourages success, independence, and confidence.
With my experience as an educator, Dean of Students, Director of Primary, and now Director of Middle School , I have complete faith that your student will be both challenged and supported with the tools they need to grow and prosper in today’s world. I am excited to partner with you and look forward to getting to know your student(s) as we embark on this journey together.
Wishing you a warm welcome to our school community and a prosperous school year ahead!
Warm regards,
Dear New BASIS Independent Brooklyn Students,

Welcome! My name is Samay. I’m in 8th grade, and I have been a student at BASIS Independent Brooklyn for ten years!
My favorite thing about our school is our acting program. Last year I got to play Shrek in Shrek The Musical which I was very excited about. My favorite class at BASIS Independent Brooklyn is Biology with Ms. Thorne.
If I were to give a piece of advice to new students it would be to ask for help when you need it and do your homework right away. I find it's easier for me to complete new assignments right away and not procrastinate.
-Samay A., Grade 8

Dear Newly-Accepted BASIS Independent Bears,
Congratulations and welcome to the BASIS Independent Brooklyn High School Program! I am excited to extend an invitation to join our amazing community.
You have demonstrated commitment, critical thinking, and hard work. These traits will allow you to thrive in our rigorous academic program. Our students support one another in learning, and motivate their peers to be better. As your Director of Student Affairs, I work closely with the teachers and the Dean of Students to ensure that all students are supported and challenged to learn to their full potential.
I look forward to partnering with you over the next four years in your high school career and supporting you as you work toward growing, developing, and achieving your academic and personal goals.
In partnership,
Darlene Forde
Director of High School
Congratulations on your acceptance and welcome to the BASIS Independent Brooklyn community! I have been a BIB student for ten years, and as I get closer to the end of my time here, it is rewarding to reflect on the growth I have experienced and the relationships I have established as a part of this school community.

My favorite thing about BASIS Independent Brooklyn is the community and the connections you make here. I encourage all new students to try something new that may be out of their comfort zone. There are so many opportunities for you to get involved and it will help you become fully immersed in our community. I recommend joining sports teams and clubs. Last year I helped establish our High School Girls Soccer Team and that has been a great experience so far.
I also recommend going to student hours to get to know your teachers and to get extra support if you need. They are there to help you succeed and bring the best out of you.
Congrats, again! I look forward to getting to know you.

It is vital for our students to have the option of a wide variety of activities outside of the classroom in addition to our robust academic curriculum. At BASIS Independent Brooklyn we offer an array of competitive sports teams and athletic clubs. We firmly believe that there is just as much learning and growth that happens on the fields and courts as in the classroom.
Our highly qualified coaches focus on developing teamwork, collaboration, leadership, resiliency, grit, and mental toughness, all of which are important for young children. For students in grades 3-5, we currently offer clinics in soccer, basketball, flag football, cross-country, volleyball, tennis, and baseball. Clinics are open to students regardless of skill or ability and are a great way for your child to try a new sport in a safe and supportive environment.
Competitive sports are offered to our students in grades 6-12 in the fall, winter, and spring. All of our sports teams are continually winning championships or making deep playoff runs. Below is a list of our sports offerings by season:

Spring:
BASIS Independent Brooklyn offers a growing set of after-school athletic and club opportunities for our Bears and Bear Cubs to explore their outside interests and develop a well-rounded sense of self. Many of these endeavors are student-inspired, offering leadership opportunities to students of all ages. Additionally, we understand that many of our families need after-care for their students, and we're happy to offer Bear Care programming for students in PreK-grade 8.

Students at BASIS Independent Brooklyn take a rotation of Arts classes from PreK-grade 5, with each subject meeting once or twice a week, depending on the grade. They can start specializing in a specific discipline as early as grade 6, when they are offered a Fine Arts elective--their first choice in their curriculum. Art courses continue through High School with electives including: digital photography, music production, and AP Studio Art courses. Every year, we have graduating seniors who decide to pursue the arts in college.
We hire for subject expertise across all disciplines, and that includes our arts programming. Whether that is Ms. Markel, an award-winning educator who studied with the Royal Shakespeare Company, or Mr. Peebles, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, students at BASIS Independent Brooklyn learn a rigorous, in-depth, and thorough curriculum in their arts classrooms from passionate, dedicated subject matter experts.
